Our Mission
To bring the healing power of art to children and families facing medical challenges.
Our Vision
At CHAP, children are known for their creativity and ingenuity — not by their disease, diagnosis or disability.
Our Impact
Art heals. We see it every day as we hold space for medically-challenged children and their families to get creative. The cornerstone of our work is providing weekly art interactions in area hospitals when kids often need it most. It might be an emotional release they are needing or it may be a moment of joy they are seeking. Whatever it is, they are the "art director" in that moment, deciding what to do and how to do it. CHAP encourages creative exploration and even messiness in everything we do. That's a welcome change for many kids who are undergoing treatments.
Children continue their creative journey when they leave the hospital at weekly Art Clubs at the CHAP studio. We have floor to ceiling art supplies of all kinds to spark any imagination. Art Club is a wonderful way for children and families to gain support from each other, having shared common experiences. Those who live too far from the art studio can receive up to 4 boxes of themed art supplies called CHAP in a Box. We also host Inclusive Summer Art Workshops for kids and Open Studios as well as support community outreach events.
All programs for children dealing with any medical and/or mental health issues are free!
The Healing Power of Art
Any medical environment can often be a place of significant anxiety, fear, and restlessness. CHAP’s art-making projects translate nervous energy into creativity, provide a sense of calm, and promote family connection in the midst of difficult times. A growing body of research shows that incorporating arts experiences into healthcare and treatment plans can play a key role in the healing process and improve overall quality of life for children and their families. Research shows art promotes physical, mental, and emotional recovery; decreases pain; and helps children cope with anxiety. It can also reduce the use of pain medication and shorten hospital stays.
